Broken Trust

Forgiveness does not have anything to do with future trust. A forgiven person may still be an untrustworthy person.

Sadly, many people have made the mistake of thinking that not only do they have to forgive but that their forgiveness also requires them to continue to trust that person as if nothing had happened. This is not the case, and in some cases this belief can be very dangerous.

I knew of a man who had sexually abused a friend’s children while he babysat them. When the parents discovered what he had been doing, he seemed deeply repentant. He was full of remorse and heartbreak at what he had done. Initially he was suspended from his job in the church, but then he was forgiven by both the church leaders and the children’s parents.

As part of the forgiveness process, he was given back his job as a teacher in the Sunday school. It was not long before it was discovered that he was abusing more children. It had been a terrible mistake to put him back in his old job where he faced such temptation and had easy access to children. He should not have been trusted in this way.

When a person has sinned against another human being, he or she has broken trust with both man and God. The offer of forgiveness does not always mean that trust has been restored. In most cases, trust has to be earned. It is never wise to put a person back in a position where an obvious weakness could possibly lead to further abuse.
